BILETA Prize for Best Presentation at International IP Conference

Exeter Law School and the New IP Lawyers network were delighted to award the BILETA prize for the ‘Best Presentation By a Doctoral Researcher’ on the occasion of their second international conference in intellectual property (IP) hosted at the University of Exeter last month. The event was entitled ‘IP in Transitions: Re-imagining IP’ and focused on discussing contemporary challenges faced in intellectual property law and practice.

The award went to Alina Trapova who presented her research on sampling in the music industry and its implications for EU copyright law. Alina Trapova is based at Bocconi University in Milan. Alina Trapova comments: “I was very grateful and honoured to win the BILETA award. As a young researcher, it is fantastic to have the chance of presenting to such an audience that the conference offered. And winning the BILETA award is a great motivation – I saw my efforts being recognised and appreciated”. The prize was awarded on the basis of the originality of the research and the quality of the presentation style. The winner was selected by a panel of conference participants which included aspiring PhD students, early career researchers and experienced researchers who were in attendance. According to Alina Trapova, “the conference successfully brought together a wide range of perspectives on IP – from well-established academics to young researchers, from academia to private and public practice, from Europe to developing countries. There are very few such events that manage to bridge these valuable insights. It was certainly a fantastic event where I managed to catch up with former colleagues and meet very interesting new ones.” Exeter Law School and the New IP Lawyers would like to extend their congratulations to Alina Trapova, and stress that the panel was very impressed by the quality of the presentations delivered by doctoral candidates during the entire conference. The conference was sponsored by Stephens Scown LLP, together with the Society of Legal Scholars and the British and Irish Law Education and Technology Association.
